- The ‘Ville San Gregorio’ are
situated in the heart of the Umbrian valley thus it is
easy to reach the most beautiful artistic centres and
other areas of the region.
-
- The ‘Ville’ are only 3km from the
center of Bettona, a city of ancient Etruscan origin,
founded between 8 and 7 BC. The village is situated on
the top of a hill, at the confluence of the Chiascio and
Topino rivers; this favourable position made the fortune
of ancient Bettona. Still well-preserved are the walls
built to defend the city, rebuilt in1377 when Bettona
was taken over by the Perugians and put under Papal
control. In Bettona the oldest houses all had a small
orchard-garden with a tank for rainwater and a well.
And today the city is characterized by the many gardens
within the city walls.
-
- Worth visiting is the convent of
Santa Maria Maggiore built in the 13th Century and which
was transformed in the 17th Century; l’Oratorio di
Sant’Andrea where a fresco was discovered in 1394, the
Palazzo Comunale and the church of San Crispolto, patron
saint of the city. Situated in the central piazza is
the Pinoteca Comunale where artistic works of great
value can be found, including two works by Pietro
Vannucci or ‘Perugino’: Sant’Antonio of Padua and the
Devoted (1512), from the ex convent of San Crispolto,
and Madonna della Misericordia with Saint Stefano and
Saint Girolamo and followers (1520) from the church of
S. Caterina.
-
- Also worth visiting in the
surrounding area are the monasteries of San Antonio and
San Onofrio, and the churches of San Gregorio and S.
Caterina.
-
- In Passaggio di Bettona is the
Villa del Boccaglione, a splendid example of 18th
Century architecture, built by the Crispolti family from
the designs of Piermarini.
-
- A little further from the Sambro
river is the Badia di San Crispolto, a monastery founded
around 1000 by Benedictine
monks to house the remains of their Saint. During the
19th Century it was reduced to a simple farm. Nearby is
the church of the Madonna del Fronte in which a
beautiful 18th Century Madonna and Child can be admired.
-
- In the center of Passaggio di
Bettona can be found the Casino Piaceri, a large complex
of buildings near the Sambro river. Following the
course of the river one arrives at Badia di S. Quirico.
A church in the roman style is all that remains of the
original complex. Continue further and you reach the
chapel of S. Gregorio, already mentioned, in the grounds
of our estate.
-
- The position of ‘Ville San
Gregorio’ offers easy access to many services (only
1.5km away are food shops, bar, pharmacy, banks, post
office, museums, art galleries. 3 km away one can find
the theatre, cinema, beauty center, restaurants,
pizzerias, riding school, bike hire, golf etc).
